What’s unique about the story of Helldivers 2 is that it’s driven by the player community. Planning for that is a huge challenge – we have what we think will happen, but we ultimately can’t control what the players do. Which as a player I find cool, but as a writer I find really scary.

Helldivers 2 takes place a century after the events of the first game, with Super Earth having emerged victorious against its adversaries – the deadly, bug-like Terminids, the grotesque Cyborgs and the inscrutable Illuminates.

 Plus, with the official ESRB rating of the game stating that players should be prepared for intense violence and blood and gore, we can expect combat to level up within this game in comparison to eight years ago.

There's also a setting to adjust the level of image sharpening. At zero sharpening in performance mode Helldivers 2 looks soft and indistinct, while stepping up to the max sharpening level increases clarity at the cost of additional artifacting. Quality mode exhibits the same difference, although given its higher resolution, the effect is a bit more subtle. Helldivers' performance mode runs smoothly. We're mostly at 60fps in typical play, with a very smooth readout, especially when combined with the game's motion blur. The game can suffer from extended dips into the 50s though, typically Helldivers 2 Gameplay during larger firefights. In my gameplay the worst I saw was about 50fps, so the game does manage to stay pretty close to 60fps more generally, although it can spend a long time hovering in the 50s in extended firefights. The quality mode also manages a tight lock on its 30fps frame-rate target, but it clearly has issues with bouts of inconsistent frame-pacing.

It’s something you would expect from co-op mission based shooters where you’d get mobbed from time to time, but Helldivers has always nailed the feeling of being overwhelmed by hordes to a tee. Did I also mention that team killing was also made less of a problem now due to the third-person perspective change? It’s amazing that you don’t accidentally shoot someone as much as before (I’m not saying that it won’t happen, because it still can). The game offers different weapons, stratagems, and cosmetics through its "battle pass" wherein you can even trade for currency that you buy using real money.

These can be used to purchase Warbonds progression and unlock items such as Super Credits, victory poses, and gear.

They really leaned into the parody of enlistment and military media, from the music and the dialogue. Weirdly enough, it does make me feel patriotic. Sound effects from the weapons and the enemies are great to say the least, and even elevates the experience.

There’s tons of mission variety, weaponry, and even cosmetics to unlock. You may not be a fan of live-service modeled games, but for Helldivers 2, it completely works. Game8's Review Policy and Scoring System
